How a check works
When you search, our server asks every site on the list for the profile with that handle, all at once. Each site is read the way it publishes profiles: some through a public API, others through the profile page itself.
A site is counted only when the answer names the exact handle you searched, in the profile’s own address, its structured data, or its API record. A page that loads is not enough. Sites send visitors to search pages, sign-in walls and home pages for names that don’t exist, and a checker that trusts the page reports those as accounts.
Which sites are on the list
The 98 platforms people use most, picked because their profiles say something: a name, a photo, a bio, counts and links, not just a yes or no. Each is tested from the server that runs the searches. A known account has to come back as a full profile, and a made-up handle has to come back as missing. A site that fails either test is left off until it passes.
Sherlock, the resolver behind both this site and Seer, knows hundreds more. Seer searches all of them, along with email addresses, phone numbers and breach records.
Limits
Each visitor can run a handful of searches before waiting a few minutes, so that the sites we check don’t block us for everyone. A name that isn’t found is usually free, but sites can reserve names or hide profiles from visitors. A site that is slow or refuses a request is reported as not answering, never as missing.
Using it responsibly
Everything here is public: it is what anyone could see by visiting each site. Use it to check your own footprint, pick a handle, or research with good reason. Using it to harass or stalk someone is a crime, and nothing about a search here hides it from the people who investigate those.
